REG: 21 MAR 07! Government House

Hongkong, 16th February, 1907,

My Lord,

11762

With reference to Mr. Chamberlain's Despatch No. 120 of the 2nd of April, 1903, I have the honour to inform Your Lordship that the grant of £30 which has been provided for in the Estimates of this Colony since 1904 in aid of the Department of Chinese in the University of London does not appear to have ever been paid to the University. The vote appears under Grants in Aid on page 59 of the Estimates for the current year but it is wrongly described as a grant in aid of the China Association at whose instance the grant was made.

2.

I shall be obliged if it can be ascertained whether the University of London still requires pecuniary assistance towards its Department of Chinese, and if this is the case I would ask Your Lordship to be good enough to instruct the Crown Agents to pay the grant for

RIGHT HONOURABLE

THE EARL OF ELGIN, K.G.,
